50 Years

2023, marks the 50th anniversary of Kiwayu Camp.

Started in 1973 when Alfredo Pelizzoli and some friends made their way by Land Rover to the coast for a swim after a long, hot bush safari. Over the dunes, through the star palms and along empty beaches, they arrived at this surprising desert oasis, A cluster of date palms, ancient sweet water wells, and ruined mosques set the stage for Lisa and Alfredo Pelizzolis’ camp which began under humble canvas and evolved into one of the most unique, beautiful and naturally luxurious camps in Kenya.

Throughout the 1970’s and 80’s we were blessed to be witness to one of the most remote wilderness’ in Kenya. Elephant and buffalo would arrive on this stretch of coast following the rains, when the waterholes were full and vegetation was lush.

Half a century later, despite all the changes, Kiwayu remains one of the most beautiful and ecologically exciting areas on the Kenyan coast.

Lisa and Alfredos legacy remains formidable. Their creative style and sensitivity to what ever they turned their hands is the bar to which we endeavor to match at camp today. They created an eco-lodge before the term existed and through to this day we draw inspiration from the natural environment in our buildings, food, and style.
